iPad 2 lost all contacts when adding new ones

When I manually added a new contact on the iPad 2, it took me to the home screen. The contact book said "no contacts" and all my 350+ contacts were gone.Then I hold the sleep/wake button and the Home button at the same time until the Apple logo appears.
